Moses Soyer was a Russian-American painter, best known for his Social Realist portraits of Depression-Era Americans.  Born into a cultured family in Borisoglebsk, Russia, Moses Soyer, his twin brother Raphael Soyer, and younger brother Isaac Soyer all became well-known artists associated with the Social Realist style of painting. Soyer was a key figure in the early 20th-century American realist movement. His stylized and moody portraits, usually of women, sought to provide a representative depiction of daily American psychology and struggle during a period of economic turmoil.  He died in the Chelsea Hotel in New York on September 3, 1974, while painting dancer and choreographer, Phoebe Neville.

Edward Donald Slovik (February 18, 1920 – January 31, 1945) was a United States Army soldier during World War II and the only American soldier to be court-martialled and executed for desertion since the American Civil War. Although over 21,000 American soldiers were given varying sentences for desertion during World War II, including 49 death sentences, Slovik's death sentence was the only one that was carried out.

Clifford Evans was a New York newspaperman who was born in Brooklyn and began his career with the newspapers of New York, then entered broadcasting in its early days.   His work as a sports reporter and associate producer of the “Today” show in the 1950's was followed by his groundbreaking “Ladies of the Press” hard news daytime TV program, then spent more than 20 years as RKO General Broadcasting Corp. VP and Washington Bureau Chief. 

For Philip Evergood (born Philip Blashki)(1901–1973), painting was a form of social protest. In 1923, he studied at the Art Students League under George Luks, where he began painting contemporary life with artists John Sloan and Reginald Marsh. But it was the Great Depression that inspired the most drastic change in the artist’s oeuvre, as he turned to drawing horrific scenes of poverty directly from the city’s streets. At the same time, he became an advocate for social change, serving as managing supervisor of the New York WPA easel project and president of the Artists Union.
