James Amos Porter (1905 –1970) was an African-American art historian, artist, and teacher often called the “father of African American art history”. He pioneered the field with his groundbreaking publication, Modern Negro Art, which reshaped discussions on African American art within the broader context of American art. He became the director of Howard University's  art department in 1953 where he expanded the gallery's collection. Recognized by the National Gallery of Art in the same year, Porter’s legacy endures through the annual James A. Porter Colloquium and his lasting contributions to art history and painting.
