Published in a 1942 edition of Esquire Magazine, this artwork by Arthur Szyk depicts a group of Axis leaders and their sinister ambitions. Adolf Hitler, portrayed as the head of the fictional Schicklgruber & Company, is drawing a map of German South America, inspired by a copy of “Idiot’s Delight” at his feet. Joseph Goebbels is greeting Hideki Tojo, saying, “Now that you’ve joined us, the Führer will make a special map for you!”
Arthur Szyk (1897-1951) Poland emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1937 to escape persecution as a Jew. He quickly gained a following for his piercing caricatures of Hitler and other Axis leaders during WWII. He moved to the United States in 1940, where he continued to work until his death in 1951.
