Inscribed on the reverse: "This is a mathematical reduction of the original life mask bust of George Washington, modeled at Mount Vernon in 1785 by Jean Antoine Houdon. Certified by James Wilson MacDonald (1824-1908), copyright July 1899."
In 1785, French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon visited George Washington at Mount Vernon to create a plaster cast of his features for a life-size statue. This cast was also used for several busts, serving as a reference for other artists' drawings and sculptures.
