The Inspiration for “The Sugar Shack” was a night of unbridled dancing at the Durham Armory in the artist's hometown of Durham, N.C. Barnes made the painting based on a childhood memory. It was featured in the opening credits of the TV show "Good Times" and as cover art for Marvin Gaye's 1976 I Want You.
